Garage $6.38 Oklahoma roots rock quartet Cross Canadian Ragweed’s streamlined blend of alternative country and gritty rock & roll aims to appeal to both cowboy and trucker hats, something few bands besides the Kings of Leon have pulled off with any success. On their fifth studio album (their third for Universal South), the band pays homage to everything from cigarettes and Wild Turkey to heartache and late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell without a hint of pretense, relying on spot-on guitar licks, an airtight rhythm section, and the kind of impeccable production that only a major label can procure. Lead-off track “Fightin’ For” sounds like a classic rock radio staple waiting to happen, replete with a riff straight out of pre-American Fool John Cougar-land. It’s a great litmus test for first-time listeners, as the rest of Garage follows its lead with a combination of tight, melodic boot-stompers and wistful, mid-tempo laments that always maintain a willful sense blend of humble authority and mischief — the latter is dutifully represented on the sly closer, “Bad Habit.” Fans who were enamored with last year’s Soul Gravy will find little to complain about here, while those looking to join the party will know from the very first note whether or not they want to stay and get wasted. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi Performers: John Inmon – Sitar; Jeremy Plato – Vocal Harmony, Vocals (Background), Harmony Vocals, Double Bass, Guitar (Bass); Wade Bowen – Vocals (Background); Cody Canada – Guitar (Rhythm), Harmonica, Guitar (Acoustic), Vocals, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Baritone); Grady Cross – Guitar (Rhythm), Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Mike McClure – Guitar (Rhythm), Guitar (Electric), Piano, Guitar (Acoustic); Randy Ragsdale – Drums, Percussion |

Beyond the Garage $14.38 Although the material the Music Machine recorded for Warner Bros. (released under the name Bonniwell Music Machine) is little-known, it’s almost up to the high standards of their Original Sound sides. It’s also been extremely hard to find, until this excellent 20-track reissue. This contains the entire contents of the 1968 Bonniwell’s Music Machine album (some of which had actually been released on the Music Machine’s 1967 singles for Original Sound), plus various rare singles, and a couple of unreleased tunes. Though a bit erratic, the best of this is thrilling stuff, as exciting as experimental garage rock ever got. “Bottom of the Soul,” “The Eagle Never Hunts the Fly,” “Talk Me Down,” and “Double Yellow Line” all count among their toughest pop-psych punkers. Tracks like “Tin Can Beach,” “The Trap,” and “Discrepancy” also show songwriter and lead singer Sean Bonniwell expanding from the pounding guitar-organ prototype into more eclectic, but equally compelling, directions, with touches of folk and orchestration. Inventive studio arrangements and lyrical wordplay are constants throughout. You won’t find Bonniwell’s name mentioned in many standard rock reference books, but this CD further bolsters his credentials as one of the most underappreciated innovators of late-’60s rock. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Doug Rhodes – Organ; Eddie Jones – Bass, Guitar (Bass); Guile Wisdom – Guitar; Harry Garfield – Organ; Jerry Harris – Drums; Keith Olsen – Guitar (Bass), Bass; Mark Landon – Guitar; Ron Edgar – Drums; Sean Bonniwell – Guitar, Vocals |
